Laryngoscope

لارنگوسکوپ

Laryngoscopy is a therapeutic intervention during which the folds related to the vocal cords and chaknai are observed. In this intervention, the doctor tries to use auxiliary tools to see the larynx area better.

The device used to view the larynx and trachea is called a laryngoscope.

The word laryngoscope consists of two components Larynx + Scope. This device is used to observe the larynx, vocal cords and the duct between them. There are two types of laryngoscopes; Direct type and video laryngoscope. We will discuss each of them below.

Direct laryngoscope

This type of laryngoscope is used to directly observe the vocal tract and the larynx area. The device consists of a long handle (in which several batteries are placed) and a blade with a small light source embedded in its tip. There are two types of blades. Macintosh blade, which has a curved shape, and Miller, which is straight. The Macintosh blade is easier to apply, while the Miller blade provides a better view of the vocal cords. Miller is usually used in children. To place the laryngoscope, the patient must lie on his back. Then the device is inserted through the mouth and pushed from the tongue to the larynx until the vocal cords are visible.

The direct laryngoscope has several blades, which are indicated in the figure.

Laryngoscope video

A direct laryngoscope is usually used during tracheal intubation. This process is often very painful and uncomfortable, and for this reason it is not performed in a conscious patient. One of the problems that may occur due to improper use of the laryngoscope is damage to the patient’s upper teeth.

How has the Sanyar laryngoscope video solved the problem of damaging teeth?

Using a laryngoscope during intubation is a stage of general anesthesia. The laryngoscope was invented by Manopel Garcia.
